TATAOUINE TREK FROM DJERBA
DINNER AND NIGHT IN TROGLODYTIC GITE
AND IN SAHARAN CAMP
THREE DAY TREK
This tour is the same as that on two days: Trek to Chenini
and Dahar.
The difference: Instead of spending just one afternoon at Ksar Ghilane, we will join a Saharan camp in the middle of the desert to spend the night, the next day we will visit the cave houses of Matmata.
The first day we will leave from your place of stay in Djerba
in the direction of Tataouine the capital of the Berber region.
We will visit the Ksar Ouled Soltane, one of the many Berber granaries, then the ksar Beni Barka, before having lunch in
a restaurant in Guermassa.
Then before doing our little trek to stretch our legs, we will visit the hilltop village of Chenini, an essential village in the region. From Chenini, we will leave for a 2 hour trek in the Djebel Dahar, to reach the village of Douiret.
We will have dinner and spend the night in a troglodyte cottage.
The second day, we will join the desert at the oasis of Ksar Ghilane.
Between the visit of the oasis, a quad or backpacking ride
dromedary, (optional), we will have lunch in a restaurant
at the foot of the dunes.
After free time to enjoy the oasis, we will reach the Saharan camp by 4X4, 20 km from the track south of Ksar Ghilane.
The comfortable camp is organized around the restaurant - bar, with Saharan tents, the toilets and the kitchen are worthy of a 3-star hotel.
You will attend the ceremony of baking bread in the sand, then after a good dinner, you can walk in the dunes, in the silence of the desert and admire the starry sky if the weather is clear, then overnight in your private tent .
The next day, after breakfast and free time in the desert, we will leave for Matmata where scenes from the film Star Wars have been filmed.
We will have lunch in the village of Tamezret.
After these 3 full days, return to Djerba and drop off at your Hotel.
We will start the visits by the Ksar Ouled Soltane .
Located southeast of Tataouine, is one of the most remarkable ksour
from Tunisia. This ksar offers the particularity of having a second courtyard, dating from the 19th century, which extends the first built in the 15th century approximately.
It thus has the record number of 400 cells for storing food reserves, called Ghorfas, which are distributed over four or five levels.
Then the eight-century-old Béni Barka ksar .
We will have lunch in a restaurant in Guermassa before
to join Chenini and start our trek.
Chenini.
Very beautiful and most visited site located west of Tataouine, perched on a ridge. You will discover the cave dwellings, built in the rock.
Departure for 2 hours of walking through the hills to reach
the village of Douiret
Douiret.
It is divided into two parts: The old village, consisting of cave dwellings dug in the hills, and the new village located
on the hillside.
In the evening, we will settle in a troglodyte hotel where we will have dinner and spend the night.
After breakfast we will visit the village before leaving for the desert at Ksar Ghilane
Ksar Ghilane.
The southernmost of the Tunisian oases and one of the gates of the Tunisian Sahara desert, the oasis is supplied by a hot spring. The water flows to the surface at around 32 °, it is very sulfurous, you can bathe in it, it would have thermal properties.
We will have lunch at the foot of the ocher dunes, you can also take a camel ride or an extra quad.
After the meal, on the way for 20 km of track, through the dunes
of sand to join the Saharan encampment.
After setting up in your tents (Large tents under which you stand), you can attend before dinner the ceremony of baking bread in the sand. Free time at night is yours.
The night under the starry desert sky is an unforgettable experience!
On the third day, after a continental breakfast, we will leave for Matmata.
Matmata is the name of a Berber tribe which gave its name to the village. This village is renowned for its remarkable cave dwellings
which make it one of the high places of Tunisian tourism.
These are dwellings dug in the sides of the mountain around a large, usually circular well. Around this well constituting the courtyard of the house are dug longitudinally and in stages
the rooms that will be used for the lower floor of bedrooms (camour),
kitchen (matbakh), sheepfold for goats and stables,
the upper floor being reserved for the storage (makhzen) of cereals, dates, olives and dried figs.
We will also visit the Berber museum before lunch
a succulent homestay meal.
On the return to Djerba, we will stop at the village of Toujane.
At the bend of a promontory, stands this sumptuous village nestled
in the djebel of Dahar.
Built by Berbers around the 12th century at 700 meters above sea level. The village is overlooked by the ruins of an old ksar.
The traditions are perpetuated today by the descendants
Berber families, concerned with transmitting the way of life
of their ancestors.
It is a rare village where people still speak Berber.
Toujane is also known for its magnificent kilims made
by women

Visit of the Ksar Ouled Soltane.

Lunch break in a restaurant in the village of Guermassa.

Guided tour of the village of Chenini and 2 hours of walking in the mountain to reach the village of Douiret.

Installation and dinner in a troglodyte cottage.
Day 2

Visit the village of Douiret.

Departure for Ksar Ghilane by the track or the road according to the season.

Free time for visit and bath in the hot spring.

Quad bike ride or optional camel ride.

Lunch in a restaurant at the foot of the dunes

Departure by the track for the camp, dinner and accommodation in a private tent in the desert.
Day 3

Departure for Matmata, visit of a troglodyte house with the locals.

Visit the Berber museum.

Lunch with the locals.

Departure for the visit of Toujane (The largest Berber village still inhabited).

Return to Djerba and deposit at your place of stay or at the airport.
