Excursion de Zarzis à Chenini

We will leave Zarzis in 4X4, early in the morning to enjoy the day.

On the road that will take us to Medenine, we will cross fields of olive trees and pass in front of the salt lake "Sebkhet el Melah".

Medenine , is a crossroads city and one of the last cities before Ben Gardane and Libya. Next to the new city, there is the old Ksar, it is part of all these Berber ksour that we will visit during the day.

These are ancient fortified granaries, made up of cells in which the Berbers deposited their food reserves.

Then head to Ksar Hadada , also a former Berber granary, but above all famous thanks to George Lucas, who filmed scenes from his films Star Wars, Star Wars.

Then before lunch at the restaurant, we will visit the citadel of Guermass a. This old fortified village, erected between two hills, is unfortunately quite poorly preserved, but the panorama from the top of this village is magnificent.

After lunch, en route to the village of Chenini , the village is one of the most visited in the region, but the visit of this very beautiful site is essential. The guided tour will last around 1 hour, but you can stay longer if you wish.

After this busy day, we will take the road to return to Zarzis via the salt lake "Sebkhet el Melah".

During your day of private excursion, you can stop or see fit to take photos, our guide and driver, will do everything to make your excursion one of the best memories of your trip to Tunisia.

The inhabitants of Chenini have always been Berbers Zenatas.

From Roman times the Zenatas occupied the confines of the plateaus from Tripolitan South to the Jebel Amour in Algeria.

When the Hilalians came, they were among the first to entrench themselves in their ksar built at the end of the 12th century (590 AH).

Chenini's ksar would only be one phase of the evolution of the Zenatas community, what we see (or guess through

the ruins) could be the transformation of a similar institution which would have preceded.

This Old Berber village is a very beautiful and also the most visited site, located 18 km west of Tataouine, perched on a ridge.

You will discover the cave dwellings, built

in the rock, the village melts in the color of the rock

of the mountain.

Ksar Hadada

South of Tataouine, Ksar Hadada extends its ghorfas, one-storey cereal granaries. The rounded domes of the roofs, the buttresses that support the walls are typical of Berber architecture. Stairs allow you to go from one level to another.

Do not hesitate to climb on the terraces to enjoy the surrounding panorama. This place also served as a setting for the filming of the film "

Star Wars ".

This fortified village served in 1997 as a backdrop for the slave district of Mos Espa, the legendary village of Anakin Skywalker, the future Darth Vader, in the movie The Phantom Menace, in 1999. It is located 5 km north of Ghomrassen,

it consists of 380 Ghorfa on one floor.

The citadel of Guermassa

Guermassa originally housed a rural mountain society.

The people who built this type of fortified village (ksour)

in the region are called the Jbaliya (mountain people).

The inhabitants of the new village are now Arabic speakers, speaking Tunisian with regional particularities specific to this southern region, and Berber speakers (Chelha).

The ksar "allowed the Berbers to maintain themselves while establishing clientele and protection relationships with the Arab tribes" arrived in the 11th century with the Hilalian invasions.

It is built at the top of the mountain to fulfill several functions: Military, ksar citadel fortress, it protects the village by serving as a place of refuge against enemies, site of observations in all directions from the hardly accessible village.

Economic: Collective granary for the use of one or more tribes,

it allows to keep or store in ghorfas

different crops, wheat, dates, olive oil, etc.

During the drought years, you will need a 4x4 to reach the old Guermessa, this Berber village clinging to the hillside, a village unfortunately less preserved than the others.

But the panorama from the top of the citadel is magnificent.
