La source chaude de Ksar Ghilane Tunisie

We will leave Djerba in a 4X4, early in the morning to enjoy the day.

We will take the Roman way, which connects the continent to the island of Djerba, this way also serves to bring by pipeline, fresh water on the island.

On the road which will take us to Medenine, we will cross fields of olive trees.

Medenine , is a crossroads city and one of the last cities before Ben Gardane and Libya. Next to the new city, there is the old Ksar, it is part of all these Berber ksour that we will visit during the day.

These are ancient fortified granaries, made up of cells in which the Berbers deposited their food reserves.

Then drive to the desert, and the oasis of Ksar Ghilane. We will pass by a road which winds between the hills, slowly, the landscape will become more and more arid and rocky, the ocher sand of the desert, will be made wait until the entry of Ksar Ghilane .

We will have lunch in a restaurant, at the foot of the dunes.

You will have free time in the oasis, with the possibility of swimming in the spring, and in addition: either take a camel ride, or a quad ride to the Roman fort of Tisavar.

In the middle of the afternoon, we will resume the road for our return to Djerba.

Ksar Ghilane

The southernmost of the Tunisian oases is one of the gates of the Tunisian Sahara desert, and also the starting point for quad biking or camel riding.

The oasis is supplied by a hot spring, a source from a failed oil drilling in 1953, instead of finding oil, the drillers found a captive water table, 700 m deep. The water flows to the surface at around 32 °, it is very sulfurous, you can bathe in it, it would have thermal properties.

You can also take a dromedary or quad ride.

Ksar Ghilane is a refuge for around fifty families of nomads living from the exploitation of the date palm and the breeding of goats and sheep.

4 km from Ksar Ghilane, Tisavar, a fort dating from Roman times

of the Emperor Commodus.

Tisavar is a rectangular construction, the walls, built

in cut stone over a height of 1.50 m, in smaller stones

above. It served as an outpost and base camp for their Saharan expeditions. It also allowed to control

the caravans which transported their wealth towards the coasts.

The old building was then occupied in the Middle Ages, before being restored by the French during the Second World War,

the fort was used by the Leclerc column during the bypass maneuver on the Mareth line.
